Random Trivia For This Title:

  • Lava -> Director James Ford Murphy had wanted to make a film about Hawaii and its culture since he honeymooned there in 1989. The plot for this film became a bit more focused when Murphy visited Hawaii in 2011 and learned of the existence of Lo'ihi, an underwater volcano that is growing next to the Big Island and will eventually merge with it. Murphy reflected on the situation and decided to do a love story about volcanoes.
  • Riley's First Date? -> When the parents are kissing, the five emotions of Mum are listening to "Take My Breath Away" by [?] Berlin. This song featured extensively in Top Gun (1986) during a love scene that was added because a test audience complained of lack of romance. The song has since become a famous love theme.
  • Bao -> A few Easter eggs point to Toronto, Canada as the location: the CN tower in the cityscape background, a boy wearing a [?] Vince Carter style "15" jersey, and a Canadian flag pinned to the refrigerator door.
  • Bao -> The film won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
  • Bao -> First time Pixar has dealt with a racial topic. Upon returning home, Bao introduces his girlfriend who is not Asian. Fear of bringing a partner to meet a disapproving parent, can be felt with all ethnicities.
  • Bao -> First short film at the Pixar to be directed by a woman.
  • Lava -> The story occurs over millions of years.
  • Bao -> Bao is actually a play on words. "Bao bao" can mean "baby," or "precious" literally translated. Additionally, "bao" can also mean "bun," like what the mother is making.
